“Underworld – Awakening” 2012

A movie that is best described as combination between 3 -dimension, imagination, and “darkness” – a form of horror genre, I would think, can go to this one, Underworld – Awakening. The visual images and the representation of the characters help this movie become the leading one in terms of sacrificing humans and gaining blood. This movie has its series. In the earlier story, there was a scene where the Vampires and Lycans were fighting together as a form of revenge and gaining status to be the “powerful” one among others. Unfortunately, Selene, as one of the powerful Vampires fallen in love with one of the Lycans, David. Both of these two characters share the value and meaning to be humans. Their intimacy and love are seen as the images and scenes of knowing the value of humans life. The only thing that was seen to be strong among the Vampires was Selene, as the main character. Selene was searching for David after twelve years being separated together. When Selene realized that she was captured in an isolated laboratorium, she became wilder to free herself. The mystical power of Selene that helps her connect to David is through Michael’s eyes. Their eyes can be linked together, although their distance was not near. When Selene tried to follow what her eyes could see, she did not find David, instead she found Eve, who later becomes the daughter between her and David. Eve is seen as a combination between Vampire and Lycan. When Selene finally found David’s body in one of the Antigen laboratories and could save Eve from the brutal attack from Quint Lane and Dr. Jacob Lane, the Lycans, Selene could not find David. My question is, if Selene could find Eve through her eyes, why cannot she find David through her eyes as well?

From the beginning of the movie until the end, I was amazed by how computers play with the screening process and the digital representation mode for the fight and fly scenes. In spite of having interesting visual images for the Lycans, this time, part of the Vampires is not visualized in a higher degree. It seems to me that the Vampires were not portrayed well at this point. I did not see any tremendous aspect that shows the real images of the Vampires. As usual, I was given with similar images of Vampires: sucking blood and flying. When I watch this movie, I thought that I would be “wow”. It turns out that I was amazed by the visual images of the Lycans, especially with the Quint Lane. The image of the big beast helped me to see the creepy aspect of the Lycans. However, I was not that amazed in knowing and looking at the Lycans, for I was not afraid of looking at their teeth and the roar image. This time, I would think that the focus of the movie is on the Eve. She turns into the strong Lycan, a combination between Selene and David.

Specifically, Selene has a strong visual image for the characterization of the Lycans killer. Her cold outlook and the never smile face make her appear as the deathly woman. However, one thing that a little destroys her abilities to perform well in this movie is in the way she uses the guns. The one and one battle and fight did not happen quite often. She instead appeared as flying and using weapons. To me, she seems to be representing the combination between Tomb Rider and the Matrix. Another part that might be the same with Twilight is the idea of the Lycans. Slow motion was not seen in this movie, as far as I remember. Her outfit helps her appear as a manly-in-woman character. Selene still has that powerful outlook as it can be seen through her appearances in the previous Underworld series as well.

What I could learn from this movie:

  • A mother protects and loves the children no matter what it takes
  • A mother’s love toward the father of her children exists in the different realm as oppose to her love toward her children
  • A mother would do anything to make her children grow well and fine
  • A mother would sacrifice her own happiness for the happiness of her own children

Isn’t that beautiful to have such lovely mother? Of course, a good mother is not the one who carry guns. She is the one that helps the children grow more and more psychologically and spiritually.

Worth watching? Not bad. Can be watched by kids? Sure. Viewers discretion is advised, somehow.
